I always use a rack on a sheet pan and have had good luck so far. Real easy cleanup.

I have never did a direct smoke without the sheet pan. Did you think it took longer?

Yes, the pan does add to cook time. Ribs directly on the rack take 4 to 5 hours, with a pan 5 to 6. At least that’s my experience.
