Thermostat issue

I have a pit boss PB 700 DX when I start the grill and set the temperature to say 300. The actual temperature will show 140° Ish when I put a thermometer in the grill it’ll show that we’re at 300° the actual temperature seems to never be what the actual grill is. Has anyone experienced this and what can I do about it?

when’s the last time you cleaned the temperature sensor?

Never. I uave done 3 cooks on the grill. Still learning.

How do I go about cleaning the sensor.?

It’s on the side grate high.
I use a sponge then wipe it off with a paper towel
I clean mine after each cook
