Rapid Igniter Won't Start In Cold Weather, Solved (Again)

Thanks Ken - when I used the longer screws from the Hopper Access Screen, they extended all the way through the Igniter Cover and would engage the new igniter and hold it tight. So, I just need to find some SS screws that are the right length and use them. Did you have to remove the rubber grommet to get the plug through it?

Yes sir, see edit above.

Wow, that unit has an ash box. No need for a shop vac...very cool!View attachment 10909
Oh no - you still need a shop vac. The bottom of the smoker under the broiler plate still gets ash in it. But the main thing is that it makes it very easy to clean out your fire pot - and to pre-load pellets into it so that you don't have to use the Prime function. I remove it, dump it, load in some pellets, put it back, and it's ready to go.

Update regarding replacement igniter - Ken, I think that you will like this. I called Pit Boss Customer Service today to let them know that the replacement igniters that they are sending out for the PB1600s do not work with the existing igniter cover and that the replacement instructions they are sending are not appropriate for this new part. The tech said that they are aware of this as they have been getting lots of calls about this issue.

I asked him what are their recommendations for installing it. He said that the owners need to figure out some way to secure the new igniter inside the existing igniter cover. I asked if they had any screws that they could send out to help us do that, and he replied no, that each owner is responsible for locating a screw that would work and purchasing it on their own. Thank goodness that we have figured out a way to do all of that!

Question - where did you purchase the tap that you used? My hardware store had the proper size and length of screws but no tap in that size. In the interim, I'm using two of the screws from the hopper screen cover but I want to use SS screws like we discussed. TIA

Well, sorry to say that sounds just like one of several conversations I had with them. I think they got caught with their pants down using the rapid igniters with ceramic, and for now they are in reaction mode instead of permanent solution mode. I worked in machinery construction for almost 50 years, and I can sympathize, fixing product in the field is no fun.

My local Ace Hardware had the screws and tap in stock, less than $5.00 as I recall. If not there Home Depot or Lowe’s should have them, and knowing Amazon they can probably get you one overnight.

Hang in there, I think you’ll like the smoker once you’ve had a chance to use it!

I cooked some pork tenderloin this afternoon, and it turned out great! The smoker maintained temps very well, and I look forward to using it on Monday for a brisket cook. Temps will be down in the 20s that morning when I get started, so I'm glad that I have this new igniter. After this cook, I feel really good about the PB controller's accuracy and ability to monitor a cook. Now, I just need to learn all the details about what the PB App can do to monitor a cook. There's an Ace not far from me and I'll stop by there tomorrow afternoon to see if they've got what I need.
