I'm hoping someone here can provide me a little insight since calling Pit Boss seems to be a non-starter. If being 124th in line for an agent is any indication, I'm not the only one having some problems today.

PBV5P1. It went through the start-up cycle just fine and pre-heated to 350. I put a pork butt on, and things were fine for about an hour. When I checked it, the temperature had dropped to 155 with flashing dots. Per manual, flashing dots indicates the igniter is on. There are no further instructions given; it simply says, "The igniter will turn off after five minutes. Once the flashing dots disappear, the unit will begin to adjust to the desired temperature selected." About the time I read this and stepped back outside, it had begun billowing smoke. I was walking toward it when the door blew open. Big flare up followed.

So my question: What happened and why did it happen?

And what do I do now?

I intend to clean it out and inspect it thoroughly, but I'm a little afraid to start the thing up again especially since the last time I used it (few months ago), it overheated on start-up and shut itself down even though it then started the second time just fine and smoked perfectly. Makes me wonder if the two incidents indicate a more serious issue.

Welcome from Oklahoma.

My smoker is vertical almost like yours. These suggestions you may already did during your smoke. First make sure your vent is fully open, this is important. Also always use a water pan and keep it full, the higher the temp the faster it disappears. If the water pan goes dry or stack closed down or combine of both, the temp will spike and keep climbing and error out on high temp or igniter error. Also when starting your smoker leave the door open until it smokes good and will get rid of bad smoke. If you don’t the dust/smoke can combust and blow the door/glass off.

It does sound like you had a flame out to me, and somehow it started back up. If this is the case then a start up without the door open would cause the door to blow open and massive flare up. As to what caused it......bad controller or ignitor??? Unfortunately you might have to try to contact pitboss again for help, Ive always had great experiences with them. Try calling as soon as they open if you can.
