What is the point of the metal thing with holes in the hopper?

Safety reason for hands getting into the auger and objects as well.
So besides that no other operating reason? I'm removing mine just want to make sure there's no other reason.

Those are there to make it even more difficult to feed the pellets into the hopper when it doesn’t seem to do it as it should. Been my experience every couple of hours I need to direct them towards the auger. So frustrating.

I'll be removing mine too, so I don't have to keep a skewer nearby to help the pellets flow down.
and when you clean out the hopper you can't get all the pellets out with this in the way!

I removed the inner grates leaving the 1/4-1/2 inch frame with the bolt holes to provide a little more stability (very little lol) and also the look of not having holes is just more pleasing. I like the crevice on the frame as it hold the probes pretty well when not in use.
