try running your fireplace with the flu closed. Heat, smoke and moisture has to go somewhere and your box is the least path of resistance. NEVER cover the vent up!! It should be the opposite, open it up all the way. I surprised the pellet box did not catch fire and thats probably because of all the humidity created by the meat that I see in the class.
 
I would also suggest putting it away from the house while cooking. I have mine underneath a patio cover and about 3 ft from the house while cooking.

Yes I did that to a neighbors car. Started up for 30 seconds and died. I did it as a prank but it cost them a tow and I got in serious trouble. That was back in the late sixties. So yeah it choked it out quick however smokers just keep runnin!!
 
I keep my somker as far away from the house, deck and trees as possible and also set it up where the wind is blowing across it instead of in my face when I open the lid.
 
Most likely from the crack in the side glass. This thing sat in storage a few months and took a beating being delivered by the moving crew. Crossing fingers when replacement parts arrive I'll be able to finally smoke my first successful set of meat on this thing.
