Smoke stack on Charleston

On the Charleston combo grill/smoker, the smoke stack is on the propane grill side. The grill has a cap that you screw into the stack, but the threads stop with the cap still leaving about a 1-1.5 inch gap allowing heat to escape. Is this normal? Design flaw? Seems impractical to me, but maybe I'm ignorant.

Yes, all of the smoke stacks are that way no matter what model you have.
