Pit Boss app issues

I am a newbie on this forum but have been a Pit Boss owner for years. I have re-built my old grill once and it still works very well but is beginning to show it's age. So I just purchased a new PB850DX two days ago after seeing that it included blue tooth and wifi functions. Like a dummy I failed to check the fine details. Now I find that those functions are useless without being forever handcuffed to a company server. And to add to my disappointment after multiple tries I haven't succeeded in getting the app to connect to the new grill. I don't need that aggravation so I may just bite the bullet and hope that I can use the new grill without all the non-sense. If I find that I can't I will be returning it to the dealer.
If you are using an Iphone, make sure your text size is set to small. I just resolved my issue with setting up my new grill.

With all the chatter about the app I just didn't go there. 2 summers back I got a Comp series and plugged it in. During the burn in it hit and held temps so I didn't want to mess up a good thing. It's never been on the interwebs.

Meat stick probes with a repeater and I can see what's going on anywhere on the property and it has never changed from hitting and holding temp.

I've never looked back

Good luck

I'll jump in as I have a love/hate relationship with the app. The grill works just fine without using the app, but as was said "I paid for it." There is some hidden connections at work. First the grill only connects directly to the phone/tablet through bluetooth to set up wifi. When connected to wifi, even without app open, the grill is connected to an IoT Server (cloud). So there is an added level of connection that can go wrong.

As for updating the grill, the best luck I had was to plug in grill BUT do not press the power button. The grill controller is powered up. That is the "state" that I have the best luck at updating the grill.

It's a novelty. It's kinda cool to see the temps, turn em' up or down or shut the grill down, all from the other side of town.
