I have a Pit Boss portable gas grill model 100P1.

1st time I used it got a tasteless steak. I am use to lava rocks or briquettes. Can I place briquettes on top of the heat shield? This model is difficult to place a grate in place of the heat shield because no ledge to place it on. The heat shield has kind of legs instead.

Why do you want coals in your pellet smoker? What are you trying to get out of it?

Ok i re read it try using a better brand of pellet or try some rubs

I don't have a pellet smoker. I just have a portable propane grill. I don't want to use coals. I wanted to put ceramic briquettes on top of the heat shield but I got another grill grate and put under the top grill and put the ceramic briquettes on that. Thanks
