Beer Can Chicken

Good morning all...

I'm going to smoke a beer can chicken this weekend for the first time and the directions look rather easy, however, there are two schools of thought I need an opinion on if anyone has done this. One receipt says put the 1/2 can of beer into the chicken...the other says the same thing but add bbq sauce to the beer. Anyone ever done the bbq sauce thing and how did it work.

I've cooked many beer can chickens. I use these instead of beer cans: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000TPCZY because I don't drink canned beer and they are more stable.

I've never put BBQ sauce in the roaster.

I've tried different combinations of things. Beer, beer and apple juice, darker beer, cheep beer, added garlic, or onion, or lemon or combinations and they are all pretty similar.

I think the rub that I use inside the chicken makes more of a difference than which liquid I use.
