Hey guys, just got a new Pit Boss, and I think the first thing I’m going to smoke is a butt for some pulled pork. I’ve been trying to do some research, and I know mesquite is generally not recommended for pork. However, I’ve read that pellet grills offer a more mild smoke in general. Has anyone ever tried mixing just a bit of mesquite pellets in with a fruit blend such as the fruit blend offered by Pit Boss for pork?

I mix mine all the time and have never had anything turn out bad. One of the best mixes to is find some charcoal pellets and mix with hickory. Good stuff! But also - There are better brands of pellets than Pit Boss. Bear Mountain, Kingsford and many others to choose from that are better. Have never used Traeger pellets but most people seem to like other brands better.

I cooked 3 racks of ribs with mesquite and thought they were fantastic. Bbq is all about what works for you. Go with what you like and think of all the rules you hear and see as guidelines. Experiment and see what works for you.

Welcome to the group
I smoke with a competition blend and always use apple juice on all my meats.

I agree with MikeInFla. I'm not a fan of Traeger or Pit Boss pellets. Too much ash and very little flavor. And I mix about 20 to 25% charcoal pellets with whatever I'm using which is usually BBQ Delite or Bear Mountain. When I used a stick burner I wasn't a fan of Mesquite but that's just me. I also use Mojo bricks or pellet tube to accentuate the smoke when I use my pellet muncher. Just do some trial and error....see what works got you. It's all that matters.

Welcome to the pellet jungle! I recommend getting 3 different flavors and trying them until almost empty. Then go crazy from there. Otherwise you end up like me with opened bags all over the damn place! 😐🤣

@MKinHB oh so that's where all the oak pellets went. I guess you bought em? I went to Tractor Supply a couple of weeks ago to grab a bag of oak. No dice. All they had was gourmet blend and hickory so I picked up a bag of hickory.... Like I need pellets.... I still have an unopened bag I bought from Sam's Club back in April or so! I heard good things about the Smokehouse Blend at Sam's and they are around $15 for a 40 pound bag. They also have a hickory/oak blend that I might pick up this weekend...... But like I said, I don't need any pellets right now! Currently trying to finish up the bag of pecan from Bear Mountain. Once it is gone I'll try out those Sam's pellets.

If item is out of stock at Tractor Supply, use their kiosk computer at the service desk and they'll ship them to your door step for free. I learned that this summer at my local Tractor Supply. But it has to be at their computer at their service desk.

Thanks for that tip Mike, I wasn't aware of that.

Recently I used a mixture of PB competition & hickory pellets on a couple of pork butts - turned out great. Mike - where do you find kingsford charcoal pellets? I’ve been looking for some but haven’t found any locally (Lexington, KY).
