I’m starting to get used to the slide flame shield. Sometimes I just crack it open and sometimes I like full blast but when I smoke pork ribs from raw I just leave it closed.I'm not real sure a flame tamer needs to be solid across the top or on 2 sides. I have a little Lexington (I was once stationed TAD on USS Lexington, and, one of the best BBQ places in east central Texas is in the little town of Lexington Tx..or was. I haven't been there since before Covid)
I have a piece of SS that has some pretty tiny slots in it, all over it, that I may cut and bend into a 2 sided flame tamer to go over flame pot & under where the slide thingie is for charring a steak. The sides (legs) would fit front and back leaving the flame's heat to go left and right as it darn well pleases.
I'll have to do some measuring to get it to fit under there tho.
I am not a real big fan of that slide cover but I suppose it does what it's designed for.
If toning down the hot spot over the firepot or getting even temperatures across the grates is what’s really important then you’ll probably want to look at the NEW firepot flame tamers or heat diffusers from Smokeslikeaboss that folks are using to even out the temperatures across the grates ... the posts of those who’ve done it (page search) say it really helps stabilizes the heat across the grates. Additionally, you’ll lose your sear function unless you switch it back or use something to reach through the slots and knock it off.Best flame tamer for new pit boss 850 DX
