Nine months ownership of Pro 850, and still plagued with Rust. I posted when I first got the 850 about how badly it was rusting. To start this season in June I had to spend a few hours wire brushing and grinding the huge amount of rust off the broiler, and slide cover. Pit Boss tells me that I am north of New York City and am getting lots of salt air from being 60 to 75 miles from ocean! That frankly is a load crap!! If that was the case my cars would be rusted hulks in no time. No amount of oil is going to stop the rust. It might if after each cook I immersed the parts in a barrel of canola oil until the next use. I like the results when I do a cook, but there is no way I would recommend a friend buy a pit boss unless I did not consider him a friend. Really disappointed in quality of workmanship.

I just got my 820 sportsman and noticed surface rust on the sear plate area where it slides back and forth. It is a concern and I seasoned it well. cooking today and plan on putting olive oil on thick before and after I cook today. I dont know what else to do. It is just the metal used to make these. replacing them after a few years or when they rust out might not be that expensive. I have to replace my burner tubes in my propane grill every 3 years cause they rust out.

Yes I had some cheap Char Broils which rusted out after several years, but this is not a few years, it is a few months.

Yes I had some $200 Char Broils that rusted out after 3 years, but this should not be after less than a year. The slide costs $65.00 do not know what the broiler plate is.

mine had that on it after the first time I used it but not that much. I think the problem is the slide, which on top of the grate dosent heat up as much because of the double layer of metal, one on top of the other, and the food drippings dont sear off in that area. If you take sear plate off and cover with heavy duty foil it might stop this. I cooked all day long yesterday and as soon as I was done I moved that sear plate back and forth during the 500 degree burn to get rid of all the grate mess and then took it off and it was surface rusted again on top and under it. I took an old t shirt and rubbed it all off and then sprayed cooking oil all over it to try to stop it. I thought of high temp paint but then it probably wouldnt work as a vaporizer like its suppose to. I also have surface rust inside and on top of the burn pot. I live in Kansas City Mo. so I dont have saltwater issues, just humidity. I do keep mine covered up and under my deck. It does not get rained on. I guess we will just have to deal with it and try to keep it from rusting out.

I do the same with mine, but the fact still remains when you spend $700.00 for a grill it should not be doing this. Living with the maintenance is one thing, refurbishing it all the time is not living with it. That is a design flaw, and cheap materials. Hence why I would never recommend pit boss and will continue to tell any one what a poor product this is.

I went to Menards yesterday and they had the 820 competition smoker and it looked like it had the sear plate vaporizer made with different metal. I wonder if they changed it after the sportsman has been out for a few years.

I just read on the pit boss web sight under frequently asked questions that it is normal for the sear plate to get rust on it and even warp!!! They say over time it will get better and not to use water to rinse it off. Just scrape it off or move the plate back and forth to help clean it off. I scraped mine today and sprayed the hell out of it and the bottom of the barrel and cleaned the whole thing up real good. I have only cooked 3 times on this and clean everything after every use. Go to the THIS IS PIT BOSS tab and at the bottom right you will find the frequently asked question sentence to click on.

As hot as that spot gets above the burner pot, it will NOT hold any paint!
doesn't hurt anything. Had my Lockhart 3+ years. Been that way since 1st burn.
Good thing about the PB warranty is it's 5 years.
Complain to Customer Service, maybe they will send you a new one to have on hand....

Maybe it will be the new version like I saw on the 820 competition smoker.

I also have the Pro 850 that i picked up around father's day. When i did my burn in I coated both plates with grape seed oil as I had read that it had a higher burn temp than olive oil. I have eight cooks on it in about a month and a half and have no rust issues. I also coated the utensil hooks with it to seal them. I feel for you as I saw one at Lowe's that had been left outside and showed a surprising amount of rust. Why they would leave it out there exposed doesn't make much sense.

I can’t believe people try to keep up with these girls like it’s a classic car painting and sanding this is ridiculous these things are made with cheap metal and rust out horribly I’ve never paid so much money for such a piece of garbage that rusted out so fast in my life I have put it in the same place I have been putting grills for years in my yard and I have never had one rust out so fast

We have an $1100 one in the store right now. It is a offset box barrel smoker and the grate on the barrel side is rusted bad. I dont get whey they let this happen. It never been outside only in the store for several months. Im just going to keep wiping off and coating it till I have to order a new one. what other metal would they use to withstand the temps and not rust?

This is the $1199.00 horizon I was talking about! Both grates and firebox grate is rusted. Would you pay that price for this grill?
