Pitboss Laredo 1000 long cooks and emptying the ash pot

I am glad I found this forum. I have a question on my Laredo 1000. I love cooking brisket and I find I need to empty the ash pot after about 4 or 5 hours. I have had the back burns into the hopper before and want to prevent this from happening.
Is the ash pot the issue or am I creating an issue where there isn't one?
If you empty your ash pot, how do you do it? I know the instructions say to turn the smoker off first, I just pull and empty it quickly, then replace it.
If anyone has any thoughts I would love to hear them.
