Greetings Brain Trust,
My PB 850 is a couple years old and one thing I have always noticed i that the heat closest to the fire pot is always hotter. I have never done a temp check but food closest to the fire pot cooks faster. The baffle plate (heat diffuser?) has a downward slope towards the smoke stack/grease bucket end. Knowing heat rises I am wondering if the slope of the plate is getting hotter at the fire pot end because of the slope for grease drainage? Has anyone noticed this issue when smoking and the grills are covered with several smaller items, (Chicken Breast's)? Has anyone done any mods for this?
Thank you, KC

It’s always hotter above the pot.
You could always get a diffuser for it

Was looking up diffisers and saw this.
I can get changing diffuser but have no clue about flame deal. What he has looked like a trager one. You ever tried one.?
Thank you KC

Yes, I've got the 4 window version of that for my Austin XL. It helped with my hot spot quite a bit.

Thank you so much. I just ordered the 3 window as hoping that will dissipate heat better on the low end of the baffle plate.

I junked the stock diffuser for my 1150xl for one of these diffusers and got much more even heat across the grate. And a more consistent temps. Not near as much swing. And as a bonus....if you are looking for added smoke try the MOJO bbq cubes. Just lay a cube or two right on the diffuser and you will get a dose of nice, flavorful smoke added.

The 850 works great and not complaining, its just that the baffle plate sits at a downward angle for the grease to run off and the fire pot is at the high end. Heat natrually rises so the dispansation of it tends to favor the high end. I saw on the Smoke Daddy Reviews site that the Trager baffles may warp.
