So I’ve been having long fight with my Pit Boss grill (PB1150PS2)…
I don’t use it to smoke meats very often, I mostly cook steaks, burgers, chops, etc. I almost always cook at 450 or 500 degrees.
When I first bought it it would get to temperature in about 20 - 30 minutes and was pretty stable, although the internal temperature varied a lot from one end to the other. But I could still cook great steaks, burgers, chops, etc.
Then the App updated and forced a firmware update and everything changed. I would have to log into my WiFi every time I started the app, if I didn’t, the grill would disconnect as soon as I got out of Bluetooth range.
At this point I started on this forum and I learned some stuff.
I also called Danson’s tech support and did some diagnosing over the phone and they sent me a new controller. I have to say that I am VERY impressed with their support and the way they stand behind the warranty. I installed the controller and I started noticing that the temperature would rise to about 60% of the set temperature and then hang.
So I called support and a very helpful guy changed the way I start up (lid open) and told me to unscrew the chimney cap until I had a two finger gap underneath it.
Also, I purchased and installed an aftermarket stainless fire pot and the air gap mod. And removed the diffuser plate.
Now my grill gets to 500 F in about 15 minutes, is rock steady and varies about 10 degrees from end to end so I am much happier with the cooking.
About the app, bluetooth and WiFi:
I still have to log on to my WiFi every time I start up, even though I leave it plugged in to power all the time - my WiFi system is a brand new Eero 6E Pro mesh with 2 nodes. The Wi-Fi chip in the controller is an Expressif chip - I have 2 other IOT devices that are Expressif that are connected to the same node in my system that have no issues.
So now, on Easter Sunday, I start a cook and when I open the app it gives me “Server Error” and wants me to log into (I assume Pit Boss/Dansons) and it wants to help me change my password.
Here’s my opinion about that - when I want to cook something on my grill I just want to cook and use my app to monitor. I don’t give a rat’s hooty—hoot about the fancy graphics or “recipes”, I think it’s pathetic that I should have to log into anyone’s remote server so I can use an app for my grill..

My app will not load all the way either, takes forever to get to the control your smoker page, then gets stuck on checking firmware. I dont think Pit Boss Products will be in my outdoor kitchen much longer. WIsh they spent the money on their NASCAR Sponsorship on their products, making them work

Same problem here yesterday too. I figured it was a WIFI or Bluetooth problem on my end.

I looked in my Eero network and found the ip address of my Pit Boss. I entered that address into a browser and came up with this:

Anyone know the username and password for this? It would appear to be the admin login for the grill…

I’m with you. The grill should be a happy place and not a source of frustration or test of your tech knowledge-how. This is my second and my LAST Pit Boss.

I wont buy a grill that has all that stuff. I turn on my pit boss. I set the temp i want. I check what its doing by standing right in front of it every now and then. I have a cheap stand alone probe unit that works flawlessly. When my cook is done, stress free i'll add, i shut down my pit boss......

I also sit back, watch the smoke fly (not worrying about some escaping from little cracks between lid and body) and enjoy a few cold beverages the whole time....

Stress and remote control have no place in cooking.....

Totally agree with you!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
My 820 has served me well

I’ve been saying for the past couple of years the app is garbage. Have never used it. Like others, I set my temp to what I want and then occasionally go outside to check it out. The only thing I periodically keep an eye on is my Meater thermometer. But I rarely look at that unless I hear it ding.

App either great for me until there update beck in August now I get no notifications anymore and pitboss support is useless

was not a rant about Pit Boss or Danson’s the only thing I am not totally happy about is the app. Pit Boss support guys are very good and everything else about my grill is pretty much spot on now.
After 3 years of a lot of burgers, steaks and chops I have it on smoke for the first time, smoking meat sticks
