What is the the purpose of this very thin shield? Every time I move the grill it just comes off it’s 2 pegs and interferes partially covering the fire pot. I do have the small temp probe deflector mod plate from smokes like a boss and the updated pid controller. Maybe it saves the paint on the bottom of the barrel? You can see how I found it when I went to vacuum out after the 3-4 initial cooks.

Not really sure what it does, but it is supposed to be screwed down with the 2 small holes on the left so that way it stays in place.

On mine it won’t screw down. It looks as if they are 2 pegs that stick up to “locate” the shield. I’d have to add washers to achieve that. Another reason I’m asking also is I have an almost 100 degree rise in temps on stack side vs on probe side at 350 degrees. At 250 it’s about 50 degrees according to my maverick probes. This is with the stack totally uncovered. I wonder if opening this lower area will create a bigger void to balance temps somewhat.

I removed mine to try it out and it does seem to even temperature out a bit but it seems like the grill struggles to keep temps especially in the higher range, and the sear option doesn’t seem to work good without it.

Currently doing an empty burn now. Took it out. It’s 27 here in Md. 1150 has been running for 25 mins. Temp set at 350. PB probe temp says 248. Maverick temps are 259 at the grate near stock probe, 267 in middle and 344 degrees 5” in from stack grate level. Can’t really deal with this I’m thinking

My temps today earlier were 100 degrees different from left to right at 300 plus. This is after over an hour

Yea it’s definitely frustrating, I have been playing with mine trying to figure out how to even the temperatures, I’ve seen people say to put some fire bricks on the hotter side to absorb some of the excess temperature but I haven’t tried that.

it's there for cold weather smoking/cooking, i took mine out totally and actually get steadier temps without it

The grill ended up catching on fire Saturday night. About the 4-5 hour mark doing multiple burn offs up to 450 all the way to 200 trying to get this new programmed pid controller to self learn. Took the grill, cover and Oklahoma joe door seal back as well. I’m pretty sure I’m going to buy the Rectec 590 now. Rock solid reviews. I bought this 1150 about 3 weeks ago going into it knowing the computer issues but figured the re flash would cure it. I guess the grill just doesn’t like the cold and it can’t recoup. Especially at 225-250. Anything from 350 and up is ok.
