I made my own flame tamer and want to know if it sits on top of the defuser plate or do you remove the plate? Mine is 4" tall and flame broiler plate won't fit in place, it sits on the flame tamer. What am I missing here?

I have the 850 pro and have never seen a diffuser plate before. Did all the barrel shaped smokers have one?You made it too tall if it is going to sit on top of the diffuser plate/fire pot.
To answer your question about the diffuser plate, I don't use mine anymore on my Austin XL. I added a flame tamer and air gap mod, so I tried a bunch of different experiments with different combinations, and I found I was better off without the diffuser plate.
Here it is with the diffuser plate:

I researched it at one point, and I think it was only on the largest ones (~36" wide).I have the 850 pro and have never seen a diffuser plate before. Did all the barrel shaped smokers have one?

It looks like it sits about two inches over fire pit?You made it too tall if it is going to sit on top of the diffuser plate/fire pot.
