Excessive smoke and flare up.

I started my grill up and it started to smoke extremely yellow (sulfur colored) smoke and the temp shot to 485 plus. I reached to turn off and it ignited and blew flames out from under the lid. Toasted my eyebrows and hair. Anyone explain this for me?
