I have the pro seriess 1100 barrel pit bos....I notice on the chimney lid even when all the way down it doesn't totally block the chimney, is it better to be all the way down, half way open or all the way open. I assuming for smoking all the way open is best as to let dirty smoke escape but I'm wondering if all the way down when doing wings or something your cooking over 400 wouldn't be better to keep heat more even.

Pretty much the top is just there to keep rain out. But if you have it all the way down in can keep heat in causing it to get too hot. I always leave mine about half way on my vertical smoker.

Chimney cap does not play a role as I have tried so many different gaps and the temps did not change. The Grill is not super air tight anyway so that is why it is not a major function as I seen guys remove the cap completely for some reason. Mine is wide open and I get the same temps.

When I purchased the chimney was completely screwed down and I had igniter issues. I called the help line and they recommended keeping it as open as possible.
I did notice on a cold rainy windy day it did fluctuate the temp more as it was over compensating for cold wind coming in and temp would go up 5-10 degrees for a short time rather than staying steady, when we lowered the chimney to 1/2 inch opening it remained steady for the remaining 4 hours.

I was told by Pitboss tech support to open all the way and it seems to keep steady temps. We are in a mostly hot area.
